I met Dave and took his photograph in the barrel shed, but the Palmer's passion for wine and warm welcome has quickly made them friends. During vintage, Dave is hands-on in every imaginable way. I've never met a winemaker so passionate, or so covered in wine as Dave Palmer. He is warm, welcoming and every visit to Skillogalee is a pleasure.

This is what Roland Hauck had to say about his winning photo:

The photo was taken in the village of Haardt near Neustadt in the palatinate ("Pfalz") region in Germany.

In case sombody wonders what my granny is carrying into the vinyard: it is blue plastic "stockings" that you put around the young vines to protect them against the bite of rabbits.

I live in Neustadt (with wife and a kid) and work in the advertisment department of a supermarket group called "Globus" (we sell a lot of wine too, by the way).

I'm a professional photographer living and working in Healdsburg, California in Sonoma County. My father started working in the wine industry over 50 years ago and is still going strong and I've found myself, perhaps genetically, drawn to images of wine country. This past fall I spent the harvest with a particular picking crew as they worked a place called "Cougar Ridge" on the mountain above Alexander Valley. Trying to keep pace with the group as they moved along the ridges and hillsides was a workout.
